Hysterectomy

A surgical procedure to remove the uterus, often used to treat gynecological conditions and improve quality of life.

What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus. In many cases, the ovaries are left intact, allowing natural hormone function to continue. This procedure is a common and effective treatment for a range of gynecological conditions that cause chronic pain, heavy bleeding, or other health concerns.

Each year, thousands of women undergo a hysterectomy to relieve symptoms and improve their well-being. It is one of the most frequently performed surgeries, second only to Cesarean sections for women under 60. With advancements in surgical techniques, many hysterectomies can now be performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic methods, leading to faster recovery and less discomfort.

Why Might You Need a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy may be recommended if you have:

  • Uterine fibroids – Large or multiple fibroids causing pain, pressure, or heavy bleeding.
  • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding – When other treatments don’t provide relief.
  • Endometriosis or adenomyosis – When the uterine lining grows abnormally, causing severe pain and heavy periods.
  • Uterine prolapse – When the uterus shifts downward due to weakened pelvic muscles.
  • Precancerous changes – Such as atypical endometrial hyperplasia or abnormal Pap smear results.

If these conditions significantly impact your daily life, a hysterectomy may provide long-term relief and improve your overall health.

Are There Alternatives?

For some conditions, other treatments may be considered:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding can sometimes be managed with medications or endometrial ablation, but these are not always permanent solutions.
  • Fibroids can be removed through myomectomy, a procedure that preserves the uterus. However, fibroids may grow back over time.

If you’re unsure whether a hysterectomy is right for you, Dr. Ezwana Elias will discuss all available options and help you make an informed decision.

Types of Hysterectomy Procedures

The best surgical approach depends on your condition, medical history, and the surgeon’s expertise.

1️⃣ Abdominal (Open) Hysterectomy – The most invasive method, requiring a large incision in the abdomen. Recovery typically takes 6 weeks.

2️⃣ Vaginal Hysterectomy – The uterus is removed through the vagina, leaving no abdominal scars. This is best for women with uterine prolapse.

3️⃣ Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (Keyhole Surgery) – A minimally invasive technique using small incisions, leading to faster recovery, less pain, and minimal scarring.

Our Specialty – Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

At Dr. Ezwana Elias’ clinic, we specialize in minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy—a modern alternative to open surgery. Using tiny incisions (0.5-1 cm), a high-definition camera provides a detailed view of the pelvic organs, allowing for precise surgery with minimal impact on surrounding tissues.

Why Choose Laparoscopy?

Compared to open surgery, laparoscopic hysterectomy offers:

Less pain – Smaller incisions mean less post-surgical discomfort.
Minimal scarring – Tiny scars heal better than large surgical wounds.
Shorter hospital stay – Most patients go home within 1-3 days.
Faster recovery – Many return to normal activities in 2-3 weeks, compared to 6 weeks for open surgery.
Lower risk of infection – Less tissue exposure reduces the chance of post-surgical complications.

Comparison Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Open Abdominal Hysterectomy
Scar Size Small (0.5 – 1 cm incisions) Large (8 – 10 cm incision)
Pain Medication Minimal More required
Hospital Stay 1 – 3 days 5 – 7 days
Time Off Work 2 – 3 weeks 6 weeks
Infection Risk Lower Higher

Is Laparoscopic Surgery Safe?

When performed by an experienced surgeon, laparoscopic hysterectomy has similar safety levels as open surgery. Risks include bleeding, infection, and damage to nearby organs, but serious complications are rare. Dr. Ezwana Elias will discuss any risks based on your individual health condition.

What to Expect Before Surgery

Before your procedure, you’ll meet with Dr. Ezwana Elias to discuss:

  • Your surgical options and what to expect.
  • Any pre-operative tests needed (such as bloodwork).
  • Guidelines on eating, drinking, and medications before surgery.
  • Post-surgical recovery, including pain management and activity restrictions.

Recovery After Surgery

Most women recover quickly following a laparoscopic hysterectomy. After surgery, you may experience:

  • Mild pain at incision sites (managed with medication).
  • Shoulder tip pain due to gas used during the procedure (resolves in 1-2 days).
  • Light vaginal bleeding for a few days, similar to a period.

Most patients return to light activities within a few days and can resume work in 2-3 weeks.

Will My Sex Life Change?

Since the vagina remains intact, most women can continue to enjoy a normal, healthy sex life after hysterectomy. Many report an improvement, as they no longer experience painful symptoms, heavy bleeding, or the need for birth control. However, doctors recommend waiting at least 6 weeks before resuming sexual activity.

What Happens to My Hormones?

The uterus does not produce hormones, so its removal does not cause menopause. If your ovaries are preserved, they will continue to function normally. However, if the ovaries are removed, menopause will begin immediately.

During your consultation, Dr. Ezwana Elias will help you decide whether to keep or remove your ovaries based on your medical history and future health considerations.
