Understanding and Treating Uterine Polyps: Expert Care at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, Led by Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias

At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, under the expert guidance of Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias, we are committed to providing comprehensive care for various uterine conditions, including uterine polyps. Uterine polyps are small, soft growths that protrude from the surface of the lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium. These growths are often described as being grape-like in appearance and can vary in size. While many uterine polyps are benign (non-cancerous), they can sometimes cause a range of symptoms that warrant medical evaluation and treatment.

What Are Uterine Polyps and What Symptoms Can They Cause?

Uterine polyps can develop for various reasons and may lead to several noticeable changes in your menstrual cycle or overall well-being:

  • Heavy or Irregular Menstrual Bleeding: One of the most common symptoms of uterine polyps is heavier than usual menstrual periods or unpredictable and irregular bleeding patterns.
  • Spotting Between Periods: You may experience light bleeding or spotting in between your regular menstrual cycles, which can be a sign of a uterine polyp.
  • Postmenopausal Bleeding: Any vaginal bleeding that occurs after menopause is considered abnormal and should be promptly evaluated. Uterine polyps are one potential cause of postmenopausal bleeding.
  • Difficulty Conceiving Due to Interference with Implantation: In some cases, uterine polyps located near the opening of the fallopian tubes or within the uterine cavity may interfere with the implantation of a fertilized egg, potentially contributing to difficulties in conceiving.
  • Asymptomatic Discovery: It’s also important to note that some women with uterine polyps may not experience any noticeable symptoms. In these instances, polyps may be discovered incidentally during a routine pelvic examination or an ultrasound scan performed for other reasons.

Are Uterine Polyps a Cause for Concern Regarding Cancer?

The good news is that the vast majority of uterine polyps are benign and do not pose a risk of cancer. However, because a small percentage of uterine polyps can contain abnormal cells or, in rare cases, show cancerous changes, it is generally recommended that they be removed and examined under a microscope by a pathologist. This process, known as pathology testing, helps to definitively determine the nature of the polyp and rule out any potential malignancy.

How Are Uterine Polyps Removed at Dr. Ezwana Clinic?

At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, we specialize in a minimally invasive procedure called hysteroscopic polypectomy for the safe and effective removal of uterine polyps. This advanced technique allows for both the diagnosis and treatment of uterine polyps in a single, same-day procedure.

Hysteroscopic Polypectomy: A Quick and Precise Procedure

Hysteroscopic polypectomy is performed using a thin, telescope-like instrument called a hysteroscope:

  • Insertion of the Hysteroscope: The hysteroscope, which is equipped with a high-definition camera and a light source, is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. Importantly, this procedure does not require any incisions.
  • Polyp Identification and Removal: The camera on the hysteroscope allows Dr. Ezwana Elias to directly visualize the inside of the uterus and precisely locate the polyp(s). Specialized miniature instruments are then passed through the hysteroscope to carefully remove the polyp from the uterine lining.
  • Anesthesia for Patient Comfort: To ensure patient comfort during the procedure, hysteroscopic polypectomy is typically performed under general anesthesia. However, in some select cases, it may be possible to perform the procedure in an outpatient setting with local anesthesia or conscious sedation. Dr. Ezwana Elias will discuss the most appropriate anesthesia option with you based on your individual circumstances.
  • Pathology Testing of the Removed Polyp: Once the polyp is removed, the tissue is carefully retrieved and sent to a pathology laboratory for thorough examination to rule out the presence of any abnormal or cancerous cells.

Quick Recovery and Lasting Relief After Polypectomy

Following a hysteroscopic polypectomy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, most women experience a quick recovery:

  • Same-Day Discharge: The majority of patients are able to return home on the same day as the procedure with minimal discomfort.
  • Mild Post-Procedure Symptoms: You may experience mild cramping or light vaginal bleeding for 1 to 2 days following the procedure, which is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
  • Return to Normal Activities: Most women can resume their normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours after the hysteroscopic polypectomy.

If you are experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding, postmenopausal spotting, or have concerns about fertility that may be related to uterine polyps, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias at Dr. Ezwana Clinic to discuss your diagnostic and treatment options and receive expert, personalized care.
