At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, under the expert guidance of Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias, we understand that chronic pelvic pain and other complications can significantly impact your well-being. Pelvic adhesions, bands of scar tissue that can form between organs in the abdomen and pelvis, are a common cause of such issues. While adhesions are a natural part of the body’s healing process, they can sometimes interfere with normal organ function and cause considerable discomfort.

Understanding What Pelvic Adhesions Are

Pelvic adhesions develop as the body attempts to repair itself after various types of tissue injury. This healing process can sometimes lead to the formation of fibrous bands that connect surfaces that are not normally attached. Common causes of pelvic adhesions include:

  • Pelvic or Abdominal Surgery: Any surgical procedure in the pelvic or abdominal area, including gynecological surgeries, appendectomies, and cesarean sections (C-sections), can trigger the formation of adhesions as part of the body’s natural inflammatory and healing response.
  • Infections Affecting the Reproductive Organs: Infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can be caused by untreated sexually transmitted infections, can lead to significant inflammation and subsequent scar tissue formation in the pelvic region.
  • Endometriosis: This condition, where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, can cause chronic inflammation and bleeding. Over time, this can lead to the development of adhesions involving the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic organs.

While many individuals may have adhesions without experiencing any noticeable problems, these bands of scar tissue can become problematic when they restrict the normal movement of organs or cause them to stick together.

How Do Adhesions Affect the Body?

The impact of pelvic adhesions can vary depending on their location and extent. Some common ways adhesions can affect the body include:

  • Pelvic Pain: Adhesions can pull on organs, nerves, and other tissues, restricting their স্বাভাবিক movement and leading to chronic pelvic pain. This pain can range from a dull ache to sharp, intermittent discomfort.
  • Infertility: If adhesions form around or within the fallopian tubes, they can block the passage of the egg from the ovary to the uterus or prevent sperm from reaching the egg, thus contributing to infertility.
  • Digestive or Bladder Issues: In some instances, adhesions can involve the intestines or bladder, potentially leading to problems such as bowel obstruction, chronic constipation, pain during bowel movements, or bladder discomfort and dysfunction.

How Does Laparoscopic Surgery Help in Treating Pelvic Adhesions?

If pelvic adhesions are determined to be the cause of pain, infertility, or other health issues, they can often be safely and effectively removed using laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, Dr. Ezwana Elias specializes in this minimally invasive approach, which offers several benefits:

  • Minimally Invasive: Laparoscopic surgery involves making only small incisions (typically less than half an inch) in the abdomen. This minimizes trauma to the body compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Precision Surgery: During the procedure, a thin, telescope-like instrument with a high-definition camera (laparoscope) is inserted through one of the small incisions. This provides a magnified and detailed view of the pelvic area on a monitor, allowing Dr. Ezwana Elias to precisely visualize and carefully remove the adhesions while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
  • Lower Risk of New Adhesions: Because laparoscopy involves less tissue handling and manipulation compared to open surgery, there is often a lower risk of new adhesions forming after the procedure.
  • Faster Recovery: Patients undergoing laparoscopic adhesion removal typically experience less post-operative pain, require a shorter hospital stay, and can return to their normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks.

Preventing Adhesions from Returning After Surgery

To further minimize the chance of adhesions reforming after laparoscopic surgery, special adhesion barrier products can sometimes be placed inside the pelvis. These barriers act as a temporary physical separation between tissues, reducing the likelihood of scar tissue connecting them during the healing process. Dr. Ezwana Elias will discuss whether the use of adhesion barriers is appropriate for your specific situation.

If you are experiencing chronic pelvic pain, infertility, or other discomfort that you suspect may be related to pelvic adhesions, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias at Dr. Ezwana Clinic for an expert diagnosis and personalized treatment plan to help restore your comfort and function.
