Minimally Invasive Diagnosis and Treatment for Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Expert Care at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, Led by Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias

At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, under the expert guidance of Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias, we understand that changes in your menstrual cycle can be concerning. Abnormal uterine bleeding refers to any bleeding from the uterus that is different from your regular monthly period. This can include bleeding between periods (intermenstrual bleeding) or bleeding after menopause. While occasional spotting may not always indicate a serious problem, persistent, heavy, or unexplained bleeding warrants a thorough evaluation by a medical professional to determine the underlying cause and ensure appropriate management.

When to Seek Medical Advice for Abnormal Bleeding

If you experience any unusual bleeding patterns, it is important to consult with your general practitioner (GP) or a gynecologist. An initial consultation will typically involve a discussion of your medical history and your specific bleeding symptoms. A pelvic exam, during which the doctor visually and physically examines the external genitalia, vagina, and cervix, along with a Pap smear (if indicated), can help to identify potential causes of bleeding related to the vulva, vagina, or cervix.

Common non-cancerous causes of abnormal uterine bleeding that we frequently diagnose and treat at Dr. Ezwana Clinic include:

  • Fibroids: These are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. They can vary in size and location within the uterus and can sometimes cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, as well as bleeding between periods.
  • Polyps: Uterine polyps are small, soft growths of tissue that develop on the lining of the uterus (endometrium). They can cause irregular bleeding, spotting between periods, or bleeding after menopause.
  • Endometrial Hyperplasia: This condition involves the thickening of the uterine lining (endometrium) due to an excess of estrogen without enough progesterone. It can lead to heavy, prolonged, or irregular bleeding and, in some cases, may increase the risk of developing endometrial cancer.

In addition to a pelvic exam, a pelvic ultrasound is a valuable imaging tool that can help to visualize the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. This non-invasive test can effectively detect the presence of fibroids, polyps, or thickening of the endometrial lining, guiding further diagnostic and treatment decisions.

Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment with Hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic

At Dr. Ezwana Elias’ clinic, we specialize in hysteroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that plays a crucial role in both the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding. Hysteroscopy offers several key benefits:

  • Direct Visualization of the Uterine Cavity: During a hysteroscopy, a thin, lighted telescope with a camera (hysteroscope) is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This allows Dr. Ezwana Elias to directly visualize the inside of the uterine cavity on a monitor, enabling a precise diagnosis of the cause of the abnormal bleeding. We can identify conditions such as fibroids, polyps, or abnormalities of the uterine lining that may not be clearly visible on an ultrasound.
  • Same-Day Removal of Benign Growths: One of the significant advantages of hysteroscopy is that it often allows for the same-day removal of benign growths such as fibroids and polyps. Using specialized miniature instruments passed through the hysteroscope, these growths can be carefully and effectively removed in a single procedure, potentially resolving the abnormal bleeding.
  • Tissue Sampling for Cancer Screening: If any areas of concern are identified within the uterus during the hysteroscopy, tissue samples (biopsies) can be easily obtained and sent to a pathology laboratory for examination under a microscope. This is essential for ruling out any precancerous or cancerous changes in the uterine lining.

Hysteroscopy is widely considered the gold standard for evaluating and treating many causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. It provides a precise diagnosis and often allows for immediate treatment in a minimally invasive manner, resulting in minimal discomfort and a quick recovery time for our patients.
