Removal of Uterine Polyps

A minimally invasive procedure that examines and treats the inside of the uterus without external incisions

A Minimally Invasive Procedure for Uterine Health: Exploring Hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, Led by Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias

At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, under the expert guidance of Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias, we utilize advanced minimally invasive techniques to ensure optimal uterine health for our patients. Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows us to examine and treat conditions inside the uterus without the need for traditional open surgery. During a hysteroscopy, a thin, high-definition camera, known as a hysteroscope, is gently inserted through the vaginal canal and cervix. This provides a clear, magnified view of the uterine cavity on a monitor, enabling precise diagnosis and treatment through the natural opening of the body, eliminating the need for any abdominal incisions.

Common Uses of Hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic

Hysteroscopy is a versatile procedure commonly used at Dr. Ezwana Clinic to:

  • Diagnose: Investigate the causes of abnormal bleeding, heavy menstrual periods, or bleeding after menopause.
  • Identify: Detect uterine conditions that may be affecting fertility or causing other issues.
  • Remove: Precisely excise polyps, fibroids, adhesions (scar tissue), or other abnormalities within the uterus.

The procedure is typically quick, often taking less than 30 minutes to complete, and in most cases, women are able to return to the comfort of their homes on the same day.

Types of Hysteroscopy Performed at Dr. Ezwana Clinic

At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, we perform two main types of hysteroscopy based on your individual needs:

1️⃣ Diagnostic Hysteroscopy – Finding the Cause of Symptoms

Diagnostic hysteroscopy allows Dr. Ezwana Elias to visually inspect the inside of your uterus to identify the underlying causes of various symptoms, including:

  • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding: To evaluate the uterine lining and identify potential sources of abnormal flow.
  • Postmenopausal bleeding: Any bleeding after menopause requires careful investigation to determine the cause.
  • Suspected fibroids, polyps, or structural abnormalities: Hysteroscopy provides a direct view of the uterine cavity, allowing for accurate detection of these conditions.
  • Fertility problems or recurrent pregnancy loss: To assess the uterine cavity for any abnormalities that may be affecting fertility or contributing to pregnancy loss.

During a diagnostic hysteroscopy, if needed, a biopsy, which involves taking a small tissue sample, can be performed to check for cancerous or abnormal cells.

What hysteroscopy cannot do: While hysteroscopy is an invaluable tool for examining the inside of the uterus, it does not provide a view of the ovaries or other pelvic organs. If further evaluation of these areas is necessary, Dr. Ezwana Elias may recommend additional imaging studies such as a pelvic ultrasound or a minimally invasive surgical procedure like laparoscopy, which can sometimes be performed during the same session or as a separate procedure.

2️⃣ Operative Hysteroscopy – Treating Uterine Conditions

Hysteroscopy can also be used to perform targeted treatments directly inside the uterus, offering a minimally invasive approach to correcting various uterine conditions. At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, operative hysteroscopy is utilized for procedures such as:

  • Hysteroscopic Myomectomy: Precise removal of fibroids that are located inside the uterine cavity.
  • Hysteroscopic Polypectomy: Removal of uterine polyps to alleviate abnormal bleeding and potentially improve fertility.
  • Endometrial Ablation: A procedure to treat heavy menstrual periods by reducing the thickness of the uterine lining.
  • Hysteroscopic Tubal Cannulation: Opening blocked fallopian tubes in some cases to improve fertility.
  • Adhesion or Septum Removal: Correction of uterine abnormalities such as adhesions (scar tissue) or a septum (a band of tissue dividing the uterus) that may be affecting pregnancy.

These operative hysteroscopy procedures are typically performed on a same-day basis, allowing for a quick recovery and minimal downtime for our patients.

What to Expect After Hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic

Following a hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, you can generally expect:

  • Mild cramping: Similar to the discomfort experienced during a menstrual period, which can usually be effectively managed with simple over-the-counter painkillers.
  • Light vaginal bleeding: This is normal and should gradually decrease over a few days.
  • Return to normal activities: Most women feel well enough to return to their usual activities within 1 to 2 days after the procedure.
  • Follow-up visit: A follow-up appointment will be scheduled approximately 2 weeks after your hysteroscopy to discuss the results of the procedure and your recovery.

Hysteroscopy is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive procedure that offers an excellent option for both diagnosing and treating a wide range of uterine conditions. If you are experiencing abnormal bleeding, have concerns about fertility, or have been diagnosed with a uterine issue, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias at Dr. Ezwana Clinic to explore your treatment options and receive expert, personalized care.
