Understanding Hysteroscopy: A Minimally Invasive Approach to Uterine Health at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, Led by Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias

At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, under the expert guidance of Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Ezwana Elias, we utilize advanced minimally invasive techniques to provide comprehensive care for women’s health. Hysteroscopy is one such valuable procedure that allows our specialists to examine the inside of the uterus with precision.

Understanding the Hysteroscopy Procedure

Hysteroscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible instrument called a hysteroscope, equipped with a small endoscopic camera and a light source, is gently inserted through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. This allows for the transmission of high-resolution images of the uterine lining onto a monitor, providing a clear and detailed view for diagnosis and treatment. A significant advantage of hysteroscopy is that it typically requires no abdominal incisions, making it a safer and often faster alternative to traditional open surgery.

Hysteroscopy can be performed for two main purposes:

  • Diagnostic Hysteroscopy: To investigate symptoms and identify potential issues within the uterus.
  • Operative Hysteroscopy: To treat identified conditions directly during the procedure.

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic

Diagnostic hysteroscopy plays a crucial role in investigating various gynaecological symptoms and conditions, including:

  • Abnormal bleeding: Such as irregular bleeding between periods or prolonged heavy menstrual cycles.
  • Postmenopausal bleeding: Any bleeding after menopause requires careful evaluation.
  • Fertility-related issues: To assess the uterine cavity in cases of difficulty conceiving or recurrent miscarriages.
  • Detection of uterine abnormalities: Including conditions like uterine fibroids and polyps.

During a diagnostic hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, if necessary, Dr. Ezwana Elias can also perform a biopsy, where a small sample of the uterine lining is taken for further examination under a microscope. This combined approach is highly effective in ruling out conditions such as uterine cancer and confirming other factors affecting your reproductive health.

While hysteroscopy provides an excellent view of the inside of the uterus, it’s important to note that it does not allow for the assessment of external pelvic organs like the ovaries or fallopian tubes. If further evaluation of these areas is needed, additional tests such as a pelvic ultrasound or laparoscopy may be recommended.

Procedure Time & Recovery

  • Duration: A typical diagnostic hysteroscopy procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
  • Same-Day Discharge: In most cases, patients are able to return home on the same day of the procedure.
  • Recovery: The recovery period after a diagnostic hysteroscopy is generally short, with most women feeling back to normal within 1 to 2 days.

Hysteroscopy can often be performed in an outpatient clinic setting. However, at Dr. Ezwana Clinic, we prioritize patient comfort and safety. Some women, particularly those with a history of previous cervical surgery or those requiring additional procedures during the hysteroscopy, may prefer to undergo the procedure under general anesthesia in an operating theatre. Dr. Ezwana Elias will discuss the most suitable option for you based on your individual needs and medical history.

What to Expect After Hysteroscopy?

Following a hysteroscopy, you may experience some mild and temporary symptoms:

  • Light bleeding: It is common to have some light vaginal bleeding or spotting for a few days, similar to a light menstrual period.
  • Mild abdominal cramping: Some women may experience mild abdominal cramping, which usually subsides within a few hours.
  • Return to normal activities: Most women are able to return to their normal activities within 1 to 2 days after the procedure.
  • Pain relief: Simple over-the-counter pain relievers like Paracetamol or Naproxen can be taken to help manage any discomfort.

A follow-up consultation will be arranged approximately two weeks after your hysteroscopy at Dr. Ezwana Clinic to discuss the results of the procedure, including any biopsy findings, and to plan any further care that may be needed.

Operative Hysteroscopy: Treating Gynaecological Conditions at Dr. Ezwana Clinic

Hysteroscopy is not only a valuable diagnostic tool but also a highly effective method for performing surgical treatments to correct various gynaecological issues in a minimally invasive manner. At Dr. Ezwana Clinic, Dr. Ezwana Elias utilizes operative hysteroscopy for procedures such as:

  • Fibroid Removal (Hysteroscopic Myomectomy): For removing fibroids that are located inside the uterine cavity.
  • Polyp Removal (Hysteroscopic Polypectomy): For the precise removal of endometrial polyps.
  • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Treatment (Hysteroscopic Endometrial Resection): A procedure to remove or thin the uterine lining to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Permanent Contraception (Hysteroscopic Tubal Occlusion): A minimally invasive method for permanent birth control.
  • Uterine Adhesions & Septum Removal: To remove scar tissue (adhesions) or a septum (a band of tissue dividing the uterus) to restore a more normal uterine shape.
  • Fertility Treatment (Hysteroscopic Tubal Cannulation): To attempt to clear blockages in the fallopian tubes that may be contributing to infertility.

This minimally invasive approach to surgical treatment offers several advantages, including quicker recovery times, less post-operative pain, and improved outcomes for your reproductive health.
